DeVos will lead demise of public education

Now that DeVos is the Secretary of Education, there is already a "Public Schools March" planned for DC this Saturday and it seems possible that this populist flare-up could turn out to be the Tea Party moment the Democrats have been waiting for.

DeVos, the billionaire businesswoman who twice chaired the Michigan Republican Party, has drawn the fire of teachers unions and the praise of school choice proponents for her advocacy for charter schools and taxpayer-funded vouchers for private education. "The (state) House and the Senate are in disagreement because they have very different views on what charter schools should look like".

Many of these private schools are faith-based which leads some opponents of vouchers to say the system violates separation of church and state.

"My first thought was oh my gosh, the United States of America is going to look like Detroit, and I know that's a sad thought, but education in my city does not look the best right now".

Betsy DeVos was confirmed as Secretary of Education on Tuesday by 51-50 when Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. They also pointed to campaign contributions to the same GOP senators who have been tasked with considering her for the position of education secretary. She said Tuesday that one bright spot of DeVos's confirmation is that the public has become more vocal about education and will serve as "a check and balance".

"I think she does have ideas, but I also trust that those professionals in the Department of Education will be able to figure out ways to work with those ideas and make them work for our public school system", he said.

DeVos said she respects professional educators and administrators across the country, while also suggesting she wouldn't be afraid to rethink the status quo, which she and her boss, President Donald Trump, have railed against.

"I would just have folks remember that she can not act unilaterally in a lot of the things that she wants to do", Young said. Because I found a path that included public education and quality public education.

Some civil rights advocates have raised concerns that, in the absence of a strong federal hand, some states will be less vigilant than others in identifying and correcting historic educational inequities of race and class.

Title I refers to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which provides funding to schools with high percentages of students from low-income families.

"We haven't had a vigorous national debate about full and comprehensive choice that would allow at-risk kids, or any kids really, to go to private schools using public funds, but I think that's a debate that we're likely to have now". "She is the most incompetent cabinet-level nominee I have ever seen". Opposed by half the Senate, she faced criticism for her antipathy toward public schools, even ridicule for lack of experience and confusion during her confirmation hearing.

She said she was both surprised, and not surprised, that the university was chosen for a first visit.

But for some education advocates, DeVos' remarks so far have done little to nothing to temper fears about the direction she and the president will take public education. "That sends the wrong message". The ACLU of MI issued a statement urging Congress not to confirm DeVos, arguing that charters "serve only to exacerbate funding problems for cash-strapped public districts".
