Sean Spicer Slams NBC Reporter on Navy SEAL's Death in Yemen

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik al-Mekhlafi made the statement, the Associated Press reported, after The New York Times reported Tuesday, citing unnamed US officials, that Yemen had revoked "permission for the U.S.to run Special Operations ground missions against suspected terrorist groups in the country". Yemeni officials said on Wednesday they had expressed concern about the January operation to the Trump administration.

"We have not withdrawn our permission for the United States to carry out special operations ground missions".

This depiction broke sharply from that of the White House, which said that the raid was "highly successful".

After the Houthis attacked a Saudi frigate off the Red Sea coast last week, USA officials said the destroyer USS Cole - the same vessel that was attacked by al Qaeda off Yemen in 2000, with the loss of 17 sailors - had arrived at the nearby Bab al-Mandab Strait to protect worldwide waterways. Among the dead is the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al Awlaki, the preacher and US citizen who was killed in a USA drone strike in 2011.

In a statement on the matter, the Pentagon confirmed that civilians were likely killed in the "complex situation", but that it yielded "valuable intelligence". Within 24 hours of the assault on a cluster of houses in a tiny village in mountainous central Yemen, the country's foreign minister, Abdul Malik Al Mekhlafi, condemned the raid in a post on his official Twitter account as "extrajudicial killings". After the election, the Pentagon presented the Obama team with a broad plan to accelerate US counter-terrorism operations in Yemen, and the Obama administration referred the proposal to the incoming Trump team. That partnership, he said, shouldn't come "at the expense of the Yemeni citizens and the country's sovereignty".

U.S. Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens was killed during the operation targeting the Yemeni branch of the terror group, alongside 14 militants and reportedly 11 women and children. On Telegram, channels affiliated with al-Qaeda celebrated Trump's "failure in the first military operation he had ordered".

The Pentagon only acknowledged several days later that several civilians, including children, had apparently been killed. They soon allowed them to resume, however, after an uptick in violence in the region.

US defense officials said they were investigating the reports of civilian casualties in the raid. But observers monitoring the conflict estimate that between 380 and 801 civilians were killed by drone strikes in that period.

Such commando actions risk bolstering al Qaeda's "narrative of the need to violently oppose what they claim is a us war against Muslims", she warned. And you know, if (former President George W.) Bush is insulted, I don't care if he's insulted.

"The use of U.S. soldiers, high civilian casualties and disregard for local tribal and political dynamics", the Brussels-based group said in a report released last Thursday, "plays into AQAP's narrative of defending Muslims against the West and could increase anti-US sentiment and with it AQAP's pool of recruits".
