Warren's male Senate colleagues read King letter uninterrupted

Coretta Scott King, the widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., urged Congress in a letter to block the 1986 nomination of Jeff Sessions for federal judge, saying that allowing him to join the federal bench would "irreparably damage the work of my husband".

It was all too much for Majority Leader Republican Mitch McConnell, who said Warren had "impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama". Jeff Sessions with Coretta Scott King's 1986 letter opposing his failed judicial appointment. But, of course, he stands on the cusp of acquiring the keys to this country's constitutional kingdom as Trump's nominee to be USA attorney general.

McConnell said Warren's testimony against Sessions' nomination and her reading of the letter violated Senate rules.

He reminded her of Rule 19 that says a senator shall not "impute" another senator's conduct or motives.

Ms. Warren acknowledged getting warned previously when she quoted the late Sen.

The objection by Mr McConnell raised the ire of Democrats and members of the public, many of whom shared the letter on social media using the hashtag #LetLizSpeak. "Warren was giving a lengthy speech", he said. But McConnell stopped her, citing a rule that forbids senators from speaking out about other senators on the floor, NBC News reported.

A vote on Sessions is expected this evening.

On the same day Senate Republicans voted to appoint the supremely unqualified Betsy DeVos as Trump's education secretary-in defiance of the thousands of constituents who voiced opposition-they also voted to formally silence Elizabeth Warren. "She wrote a powerful letter about an important moment in history that directly involved Jeff Sessions and is directly relevant to the question of whether Jeff Sessions ought to be the attorney general of the United States - and Mitch McConnell didn't want me to read that letter". Warren brought up the letter, which lambasts Sessions for his attempts to "intimidate and frighten elderly black voters", as the Senate debated his confirmation to President Donald Trump's cabinet.

She was warned by Sen. "Sen. Warren, quote, said 'Sen".
