The police began investigating Lewis after reviewing a 911 call, which was made back in May, about a suspicious person in the area, he said.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce says DNA found on Vetrano and her belongings provided the link.

The newspaper reported that police recovered the DNA from Vetrano's body, but the DNA did not match anyone in a national DNA database or a NY database of convicted criminals.

Vetrano's father said Sunday he will continue to urge the state to allow familial DNA testing, which would enable investigators to identify people in the state DNA database who are related to an unknown suspect, WABC reported.

Cops caught a suspect Saturday in the murder of Karina Vetrano, the lovely jogger whose brutal strangulation last summer - in the high weeds of Spring Creek Park in Queens - had transfixed the city.

Lewis "freely gave" a DNA swab to police and it was linked scientifically with DNA found in the victim's body, under her fingernails and at the scene, Boyce said. Phil Vetrano said on the phone to PIX11 News.

Vetrano, 30, went for a run around 5 p.m. on August 2 near her Howard Beach home.

A video released in September shows Vetrano jogging near her Howard Beach home the day she disappeared.

They believe it likely belongs to her killer but have not been able to find a match on convicted criminal databases.

The Vetrano family have vowed to push for familial DNA screening, a controversial practice now banned under NY law.

Karina Vetrano was murdered on August 2 in the reeds in Spring Creek Park.
