Homemade Explosive Device Ignites at Cheesecake Factory

Art Chute said the device exploded but no one was injured in the incident which happened just after 6 p.m.at the restaurant at 2 W. Colorado Blvd.

Vasken Gourdikian tells The Associated Press that Thursday night's incident appears to be a "stupid prank".

He said the restaurant was crowded with diners when a man opened the front doors and tossed in the device.

Witnesses also said the man ran away after throwing the device. "It was very chaotic", said Garrett Gunkle, who went back to the scene to try to collect the belongings he left behind.

"People were jumping over one another, fighting to get over bar stools, people were tripping, falling. stuff going everywhere".

Officers from the Pasadena Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad arrived on the scene after receiving a call about an explosion at the restaurant.

Officers evacuated customers and employees.

In a news conference, Pasadena Lt. Mark Goodman explained the device wasn't a pipe bomb or a Molotov cocktail, and that it contained no projectiles or shrapnel.

A spokeswoman for the Cheesecake Factory, Alethea Rowe, gave the following statement to NBC4 Southern California Friday morning. The suspect was described by witnesses as a "Hispanic or Middle Eastern" man with a thin build and a beard.

"Pasadena Police Detectives are now handling the investigation and out of an abundance of caution the federal authorities have been notified", a Pasadena police statement said.

The company says thankfully nobody was injured. "Law enforcement is actively investigating the incident, and we hope to reopen in Pasadena on Friday, as usual", read the statement.
