GM, Ford, Fiat Chrysler sales down in January

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) witnessed a decline in the market cap on Wednesday as its shares dropped 1.28% or 0.47 points.

According to the company, January sales were down partly due to its decision to reduce inventories of its older models as well as in cutting back on its incentives as a percentage of ATP. estimating a relatively flat performance for the industry compared with the same period, while forecast a 4.4% decline and a much lower seasonally-adjusted annual rate of sales than what was recorded in December or the prior January.

Deliveries of cars and light trucks slipped 0.7 percent for Ford and climbed 6.2 percent for Nissan, beating analyst projections for declines.

ALG sales projection: down 3.2%. And Volkswagen's sales jumped 17 percent as the sting from its diesel cheating scandal began to fade.

GM's inventory, for instance, could come down in coming months as the auto maker lays off thousands at vehicle plants in the U.S. Demand for sedans and compact cars has slumped amid low gas prices, which typically boost buyers' appetite for trucks and SUVs. But they're expected to return in the coming months as the weather improves and tax refunds and deals on new vehicles spur demand.

In January, automakers sold 1.14 million new cars and trucks, a 1.8% decline compared with the same month a year ago when the industry got off to a roaring start. GM sold 1,162 Chevrolet Bolts in January, one of the first months the new all-electric auto was on sale. As of January 13th, there was short interest totalling 84,077,843 shares, a decrease of 3.8% from the December 30th total of 87,442,517 shares.

January is typically the weakest month of the year for auto sales, and this January could have been particularly brutal had an unexpectedly strong December eaten into forward sales.

Several company insiders have filed Insider transactions, on Jan 5, 2017, Hau N Thai-tang (Group Vice President) sold 17,499 shares at $13.25 per share price. Shares have dropped -0.87% over the trailing 6 months. The company's Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands all saw declines.

On 10/8/2015 Ford Motor Company announced a quarterly dividend of $0.15 4.01% with an ex dividend date of 10/28/2015 which will be payable on 12/1/2015.

FCA US, struggling among many of its vehicle models, including Chrysler, Fiat and Dodge brands, saw sales increase for Ram trucks and some Jeep SUV models. Gulf International Bank UK Ltd now owns 1,129,727 shares of the auto manufacturer's stock worth $13,635,000 after buying an additional 25,300 shares during the period.

American Honda said its January sales increased almost six percent, with its popular CR-V SUV accounting for more than a quarter of all vehicles sold. Comparatively, growth in the past five years was 5.63 percent (per annum). Sandy Spring Bank's holdings in Ford Motor Company were worth $2,867,000 as of its most recent SEC filing.

GM, Ford and the North American arm of Fiat Chrysler, FCA US, all saw sales dwindle, though it is a traditionally slow month for auto makers as winter sets in and consumers recover from holiday spending.

Honda ADR was rising 0.77 percent to $29.95. In all, the automaker's SUV and truck sales were up 24 percent. The Detroit carmaker's popular F-series saw an increase of sales by 12.5%.

After sliding for months, Hyundai set a new sales record in January.
