Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska announced in a Senate floor speech this morning that she intends to vote against President Donald Trump's nominee for Education secretary.
It was reported yesterday that Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos had copied and pasted at least two of her answers to questions submitted to her by the Senate Education Committee.
The Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote on DeVos' nomination later today.
With DeVos's nomination in serious jeopardy, teachers' unions and other liberal groups are likely to ratchet up the pressure on the handful of swing-state Republicans who might still be convinced to vote against her.
Additionally, one of DeVos' main supporters is Jeb Bush, a prominent promoter of Common Core. That places the deciding vote with Vice President Mike Pence, who would nearly certainly break the tie in DeVos' favor.
"I have 100 percent confidence she will be the next secretary of Education", White House press secretary Sean Spicer said at his daily briefing with reporters. The full Senate will have to make the final decision.

Sen. Collins (R-ME) announced on the Senate floor that she will be voting against DeVos, "Her concentration on charter schools and vouchers, however, raises question about whether or not she fully appreciates that the secretary of education's primary focus must be on helping states... strengthen our public schools". It reported that DeVos is a "billionaire who has spent decades advocating for charter schools and taxpayer-funded vouchers". But just hours after several dozen City Council members, parents of students with disabilities and education advocates went to his Center City Philadelphia office to deliver a letter in opposition, Toomey's communications director told the Philly Voice that he considered DeVos "a great pick".
