Judge allows travellers who landed with visas to stay in country

Judge Ann Donnelly of the Eastern District of NY, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, granted the emergency request by the American Civil Liberties Union after a brief hearing.

On the morning of January 26, a day before Trump's order halting immigration from seven Middle Eastern countries, she encouraged the new citizens to register to vote and read aloud a passage from former President Barack Obama's final letter to the nation: "America is not the project of any one person".

The order came around 9 PM EST amid an intense day of protests across the country by opponents of the order.

With all the news in the last 24 hours about President Donald Trump's "extreme vetting" executive order that he signed late Friday, there has been lots of confusion about what happened. Contrary to the confusing headlines, including this one from The New York Times, a judge didn't put a stop to the majority of Trump's executive order.

He was granted permission to relocate to the US, but was detained along with another traveler from Iraq after arriving at Kennedy Airport Friday night.

The order said Vayeghan had a valid United States visa. The order also bars, for 90 days, immigrants from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. "The courts worked the way they're supposed to work in our country", Lee Gelernt, Deputy Legal Director for the ACLU's Immigrants Rights Project, told MSNBC. It's hard to imagine any judge reading this executive order, which was seemingly reviewed by Lionel Hutz at a bar in Springfield, without enjoining it.

Gee ordered USA authorities to bring Vayeghan back to this country and to communicate her instruction to their counterparts in Dubai, declaring that Vayeghan had "demonstrated a strong likelihood of success in establishing that removal violates the Establishment Clause, the Immigration and Nationality Act, and his rights to Equal Protection guaranteed by the United States Constitution".

They knew Trump had pledged tougher rules but did not expect they would affect holders of green cards, which allow foreigners to live and work in the United States.

More than 75 percent of Canada's exports are to the U.S. Her ruling was followed by similar decisions by federal judges in California, Virginia, Seattle and Boston.
