Lavrov says UN-mediated Geneva talks, previously set for February 8, have been postponed until the end of the month.

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov said in a meeting with Syrian opposition representatives in Moscow that U.N.mediated Geneva talks, previously set for February 8, have been postponed until the end of the month.

Negotiations in Astana took place on January 23-24, with official representatives from Damascus, Russia, Iran, and Turkey participating, as well as a delegation from the Syrian opposition.

In another development on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed hope that Moscow's cooperation with Turkey and Iran on the Syria crisis would be long-term.

The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces - a coalition of rebel groups - did not attend the meeting in Moscow.

"We believe the important meeting has paved the way for the next phase of Syrian peace talks in Geneva and will generate positive energy which is priceless for the peace talks".

Marginalization of the United States was another feature of the Astana talks.

"We're convinced that the inactivity of our colleagues at the United Nations, who haven't conducted a single round of talks since last April, is unacceptable", Lavrov said during a meeting with the Syrian opposition in Moscow.

Lavrov and Safadi also discussed current bilateral affairs, looking at prospects for further developing the traditionally friendly ties between the two countries, including active support for a trust-based political dialogue.
