Venus Williams reaches first Australian Open semis in 14 years

Whichever player wins, will become the oldest Grand Slam victor in the Open era.

Williams needed only one, hammering a backhand return down the line and giving a yelp in triumph.

Ninth seed Konta, who reached the semifinals here past year and won the Sydney warm-up tournament, managed a single break in the second set but was unable to cope with the power of the world number two. Serena came out on top 7-6 (3), 6-2 against Venus. "Then in the third set I think I was rolling".

With her win over fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe in the semifinals on Wednesday, Venus advanced to a Grand Slam final for the first time since Wimbledon 2009, where she was runner-up to-you guessed it-her younger sister.

CoCo Vandeweghe has taken the first set in her Australian Open semifinal against Venus Williams, winning 7-6 (3) in a tiebreaker.

If she achieves the goal of winning a seventh Australian Open, it will also propel her back to world number one, after Angelique Kerber snatched the accolade from her previous year.

Vandeweghe had said after she defeated Kerber the key to overcoming last year's French Open champion was to "beat her to that punch".

"I never lost hope for us being able to play each other in a (Grand Slam) final although it was hard because we're usually on the same side of the draw", Serena said after the match. It was his first major semi-final at 25 years. After the match I told her, 'Serena, I'm sorry I took you out. "I thought I was going to maybe make a few rounds".

Federer also has the prize of a potential final against his old rival Rafael Nadal, who will play Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in the other men's semi-final on Friday. That caused Venus, she said, a great deal of anxiety coming into this tournament.

Her opponent on that day was Serena who won in three sets to claim her first Australian Open title and this weekend the pair will meet in a Grand Slam final for the ninth time, Serena triumphing on six occasions.

"It's wonderful to be here to start the year out - I want to go further, I'm not happy with this, but I'm so happy to be in a position to go further".

"I probably just wanted to do really well", Konta said.

2009: The last time the Williams sisters contested a Grand Slam singles final, and it was at Wimbledon.

With her run to the Wimbledon semifinals last year, Williams became the oldest woman since Martina Navratilova (at 37 years, 258 days) in 1994 to advance so far at a major.

A flummoxed Muguruza had no answers to Vandeweghe's explosive power and suffered the ignominy of a second set bagel as the unseeded sealed progression in one hour and 23 minutes.

"Credit to her, she played an nearly flawless first set".

There was going to be a Williams raising the trophy at the end of this match as both made it to the finals of the U.S. Open.

Regarding the possibility of meeting her sister for the championship, Venus Williams said, "It's an unbelievable thing to watch Serena Williams play tennis".
