Serena on all-Williams final: 'We've both won'

For Serena, a win on Saturday would give her 23 Grand Slam titles, the most ever in the Open era.

"I think she played unbelievable".

"I'm just so excited that I have another opportunity to play again".

Coco Vandeweghe blasted her way into her first grand slam semi-final with a dominant display of power tennis to destroy French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 6-4 6-0 at the Australian Open on Tuesday. Federer missed six months due to back and knee injuries.

That win saw the thirteenth seed join Serena, 35, after her comfortable straight sets victory over fellow veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

No. 15 Grigor Dimitrov closed with an ace to hold off wild-card entry Denis Istomin, who upset Djokovic in the third round, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-1.

Serena, a six-times Melbourne Park champion, wrapped up the match when the 79th-ranked Croatian Lucic-Baroni slammed a shot into the net, the American reaching her 29th grand slam final.

Only he didn't expect to be anywhere near the semifinals. "I felt I was always going to be risky on any given day in a match situation, but obviously as the tournament would progress, maybe I would fade away with energy". "If you think about it, I mean, when have you seen an easy semifinal or something like that?"

Another tournament surprise has been No. 35 Vandeweghe.

Williams kept the momentum as she broke Vandeweghe in the opening game of the final set and the former world number one clinched victory on her fourth match point. In his road to the semis, he defeated Tomas Berdych and followed it up with a five-setter win against the indomitable Kei Nishikori. "You couldn't stop it".

Williams made just eight unforced errors in the set compared with 16 for her younger opponent.

Williams completed her run to the final by coming from a set down to end the best major run of unseeded CoCo Vandeweghe's career.

"It's wonderful to be here to start the year out - I want to go further, I'm not happy with this, but I'm so happy to be in a position to go further".

But the 25-year-old American says she feels she may play better under pressure. She had 31 winners, including 14 on her powerful forehand side.

Roger Federer qualified for the final by defeating Stan Wawrinka.

Williams also admitted this as well.

It looked fairly innocuous, but the umpire decided Maria Vittoria Viviani didn't deserve to continue in the Australian Open girls competition for this deed.

"Everybody has their moment in the sun; maybe mine has gone for a while".
