Rally at state Capitol to highlight school-choice options

The Green Mountain State plays key role in National School Choice Week, the largest celebration of educational opportunity in U.S. history. "I will make the choice to sign it and authorize school choice in the state of Texas".

The state of MS, known as one of the poorest, often trails in student test scores.

"What in your bill assures students equal access to private school as they have to public schools?" Imagine being the Detroit parent of a first-grader and hearing that dispiriting news. "We stand on the verge of the successful nomination of a woman who for the last 28 years has been dedicated to school choice", he said.

Audra Hudspeth, a student at Colorado Springs Early Colleges, a charter school started by Colorado Springs City Councilman Keith King, said she likes having the freedom to choose where she goes to school.

"What do we want", yelled Randan Steinhauser, the Texas advisor for National School Choice Week, to the crowd.

Parents - not public school bureaucracies - should be in the educational "driver's seat". For me, I look at children who were failing in a school, and then, because of school choice, were able to attend another school and ended up graduating as valedictorian. The scholarships would be distributed by nonprofits approved by the state. It overlooks the many regulations all charters must comply with, like their district counterparts.

"Really thinking about what your values are and looking for a school that is the right fit".

This event will feature a week-long celebration with dress-up days, an all-school talent show and food drive for Bountiful Basket Food Shelf in Chaska. On average, attending a charter means three extra months of learning per year. There are so many examples of school choice working well in rural areas. Instead, it would give tax credits to residents and corporations that donate to organizations that provide scholarships to students who can not afford private school tuition.

This policy exists in 17 states. Sometimes it's about the culture of a school, the kinds of offerings that might be in that school, the kinds of programming that might be going on there.

Andrew Campanella is the President of National School Choice Week and joined us on Top Story. Extra financial assistance could put hundreds of those seats within the reach of at-risk Detroit kids.

Scott also this week is important to promote alternative schools.

There are still many ways to help even more students in the short term.

Critics say the bill would hurt public school districts. Jumpstarting scholarship aid to fill private school seats would expand opportunities for low-income families, but may require removing an onerous amendment to Michigan's constitution - or an act of Congress. "It's a ticket to the future, granted today, for a child trying to shape his or her own destiny in the here and now...." Yet in Texas alone, 105,000 kids are waiting to be admitted to charter schools, and throughout the nation, more than a million children await acceptance into charter schools. "It would only hurt the public education system".
