NHTSA Tesla investigation finds no defects, following fatal crash

The Autopilot update features the following as per Engadget.

Alerts are generally prompt on the instrument cluster in those cases. As a result, Tesla vehicles (the Model S sedan and Model X SUV) built since then have many fewer safety and convenience features (everything from rain-sensing windshield wipers to the Autosteer feature that most consider to be "Autopilot") than those available in older models. But the newest vehicles are still missing some key features offered on earlier models, like autonomous emergency braking.

Some cars might require a Tesla technician to adjust the car's various cameras to activate the update, but the auto will let you know if that's the case.

The fatal crash had cast a pall over Tesla's system, prompting some critics to say that the company had overpromised simply by choosing the name AutoPilot.

This update includes the new Forward Collision Warning feature, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC), and Low-Speed Autosteer. Eventually, however, the new hardware should be superior to the old, once the software catches up.

The new software will also add a performance upgrade "Easter egg" to the most powerful versions of the Tesla cars, the P100D, that will shave another 0.1 seconds off its 0-60mph time.

While other automakers introduce facelifts in their lineups about three or four years after a model is launched, Tesla's plan for the future would drop that interval to 12 to 18 months, which is less than half of what a typical company does.

However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that the Autopilot team found that some vehicles will require servicing for "adjustment of camera pitch angle".

Consumer Watchdog has been critical of Tesla's Autopilot feature and, demanding a recall of the technology in December.

Tesla validated the first version of Autopilot silently for months, running the software in "shadow mode," testing in the background and allowing the company to check its work without actually taking control of a auto. The current cap for TACC is 75 miles per hour.

Autosteer is intended for use on highways with clear lane markings and maintains position within the lane in slow-moving traffic.
