DeVos, a MI billionaire and Republican mega-donor who has faced contentious confirmation hearings this week, has been criticized as a longtime aggressive advocate for charter schools and private-school voucher programs.

DeVos' work has centered on promoting these kinds of opportunities for families - especially those who are poor.

Senate Democrats grill the president-elect's nominee for US education secretary, who struggled to answer basic questions about public schools.

In the coming days, watch for a Policy Watch examination of exactly how much influence Trump's nominee could wield over North Carolina's public schools. DeVos is not an educator, holds only a bachelor's degree from a small Christian college, and is a charter schools activist who has called public schools a "dead end".

"Their game plan is to starve the public schools to name them as failures and to blame the teachers and therefore to move to the privatization of our public schools which I think is a very unsafe thing", said Collins.

In a letter addressed to the committee, 38 prominent education groups and teachers' organizations expressed concern that DeVos' track record bodes ill for public education.

The Independent senator of Vermont also pressed DeVos for cooperation on making college tuition free. Fourteen years of tax forms, from 2001 through 2014, list DeVos as one of the foundation's vice presidents, along with other family members. We talked about this in my office.

Betsy DeVos herself has never been a teacher, an administrator, or even a student in a public school system, and refused to send her children to private schools either. In Tuesday's hearings, DeVos said she had not used those words.
