Alaskan Wild Salmon May Have Japanese Tapeworm — CDC

But now, researchers determined people who eat raw salmon caught in North America may be at risk of contracting the tapeworm infections.

Scientists say the tapeworm was first recognized as a human parasite in 1986.

"For decades, the possible occurrence of the Japanese broad tapeworm on the Pacific coast of North America was ignored, but since 2008, human infection with adult tapeworms and natural infection of carnivores (wolves and bears) with adult tapeworms have been confirmed by use of molecular markers", the researchers wrote in the published study.

The most common fish tapeworm is Diphyllobothrium latum.

Nearly all of the previous cases of tapeworm infections occurring in Japan, South Korea and the Pacific coast of Russian Federation had actually been caused by Japanese tapeworms rather than D. latum.

Most often, tapeworm leads to only minor symptoms, but in exceptional cases the infection can turn into a serious medical problem, according to Roman Kuchta, lead author of the study and a research scientist at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Numerous infections occur in Japan, South Korea, and Pacific coast found to be originated by it. The tapeworm's larvae can possibly survive the trip and infect consumers in different countries worldwide which include New Zealand, China and some parts of the United States. The researchers then found larvae around 8 and 15 millimeters long. That means Japanese broad tapeworm larvae may survive shipment trips, and may potentially spread to other continents, affecting residents of China and New Zealand, as well as those in Europe and other USA regions apart from the Pacific.

The CDC has identified four species of the Pacific Salmon known to be infected with the Japanese Tapeworm: chum salmon, masu salmon, pink salmon, and sockeye salmon. CDC notes that freezing or cooking the salmon will kill the parasite.
