Mayor to speak with college president over US flag decision

But, the move didn't work as planned, instead drawing widespread condemnation and a protest by veterans groups and their supporters outside campus. Students had lowered the banner to half-staff the day after the election, and then later, someone set the flag on fire. Following these controversies, the College made the decision to temporarily stop flying it.

A second protest was slated for December 4, and according the Facebook event, these veterans "will continue as planned to conduct a peaceful [and] passionate display of patriotism and celebration".

And, last month, students burned a U.S. flag on the campus of American University in Washington after the presidential election. "We acted exclusively to facilitate much-needed dialogue on our campus about how to dismantle the bigotry that is prevalent in our society".

Hampshire College made a decision to once again fly the American flag.

But following the controversy, officials at the college chose to once again raise the American flag Friday morning, according to Inside Higher Ed. In response, Lash stated that he would not raise the flag again (for the foreseeable future) to "focus our efforts on addressing racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and behaviors". Before dawn on Veterans Day, protesters burned the flag. With $1.3 trillion dollars of student debt now on the books, I found myself thinking how nice it would be to hear a more persuasive argument from those who will happily take money from a country whose flag they despise.

National symbols including the flag and the National Anthem have been debated throughout the year, especially in the wake of recent police violence.

"We felt we were exercising First Amendment rights and going through a learning process, but for many people outside the campus that was very hurtful and they did not understand what we were trying to do, and we have changed course", Lash said in an interview Friday morning.

Lash also told the Boston Globe Thursday night that the school has received violent threats. "Nor did we intend to cause offense to veterans, military families, or others for whom the flag represents service and sacrifice", Lash wrote. Hampshire College officials said an investigation is ongoing and could not confirm whether the burning was carried out by students.

Now the flag has gone back up, but Lash has apparently learned little.

After making the announcement, Lash complained about the hostility he had encountered from people angry over the school's removal of the flag.
