Trump tapping Washington, Wall Street veterans for top jobs

Republican Representative Tom Price, an orthopedic surgeon from Georgia, will be Trump's Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, and consultant Seema Verma will lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a powerful agency that oversees government health programs and insurance standards.

He will do a great job implementing President-elect Trump's vision of restoring health care freedom and reversing the Obama administration's one-size-fits-all health care policies.

He also supports privatizing Medicare.

The Indiana program requires beneficiaries to make monthly contributions to health savings accounts.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name a former banker and a billionaire investor as his nominees for treasury secretary and commerce secretary respectively, and a fierce Obamacare critic to hold the post of health and human services secretary, media reported Tuesday. She is the former vice president of planning for the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County, Indianapolis, and a former director of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials in Washington, D.C.

Cornyn and other top Republicans said it will take time to move people who use Obamacare programs such as state and federal exchanges into the new health-care system they have promised to create.

"I can't imagine a Trump administration saying we want the bureaucrats to decide on the health care your grandmother is going to get", said Antos.

Instead of the Obamacare model, which mandates that most Americans get insured or face a tax penalty, Price's plan largely aimed to boost coverage by making it more affordable.

Under Obamacare, 20 million more people have insurance now than they did in 2010. "Fundamentally, it's like a sweater with threads, if you pull a few out, you gotta fix that somehow".

"There are millions of people who have coverage under Obamacare", Angoff says.

President-elect Trump has picked Elaine Chao as Transportation secretary.

Trump praised Price's reputation as a problem solver and health care policy expert.

"This is the absolute ideal choice", Ryan said.

Price, however, has a specific plan, called the Empowering Patients First Act. "We could not ask for a better partner to work with Congress to fix our nation's health care challenges". He now chairs the House Committee on Budget. That includes about 10 million people who gained coverage through the expansion of Medicaid and another 10 million who buy insurance on the Obamacare exchanges or are young adults covered through their parents' insurance.

Employers will likely cut back on coverage to avoid hitting the cap, Jost said.

Price served in the state Senate for a decade before he was elected to Congress.

Trump's transition team also used the announcement to signal its intentions on the healthcare law.

"They believe the government ought to be in control of health care, "Price said in June at the American Enterprise Institute event where Ryan unveiled the Republican proposal to replace Obamacare".

Like many of his Republican colleagues, Price has been a vocal and long-standing critic of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. "Rep. Price also is known for his anti-regulatory views and introduced bipartisan legislation that we support to delay the "pre-review" process for home health claims pending a comprehensive review by HHS of the potential impact", the organization said in a statement.

At benefits company Stride Health, which sells and manages healthcare benefits to "gig" workers like Uber drivers, CEO Noah Lang said that he would want to be sure that the replacement plan has tax credits available to people as they need them, rather than at the end of the year only.

How, exactly? That remains to be seen.

Price is a member of the Doctors Caucus, which recently has raised concern over a proposal from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for a new payment system for physicians. "They have advocated that health care reform legislation should 1) ensure access to quality, affordable, life giving health care for all; 2) retain longstanding requirements that federal funds not be used for elective abortions or plans that include them, and effectively protects conscience rights; and 3) protect the access to health care that immigrants now have and remove current barriers to access", the statement continued.

Questions also loom about the future of Medicaid funding for the state.

According to Trump's transition website, he plans to invest 550 billion US dollars to "build the roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, and railways of tomorrow". "In effect [the center] could test a model that completely restructures the Medicare or Medicaid program".
